1985 NBA Draft
The 1985 was the first year in which, instead of teams having picks based on reverse order of their previous season records, the 7 teams with the worst records each had an equal chance of landing the first 7 picks. The New York Knicks won the lottery and selected Patrick Ewing, a center who became an 11-time all-star and was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2008. He is currently the assistant coach for the Orlando Magic. With the fourth pick in the draft, the Seattle SuperSonics chose Xavier McDaniel, the first player to lead the country in both rebounding and scoring in his college years. He made one all-star appearance. The Golden State Warriors, who had the worst regular season record but still ended up with the 7th draft pick, selected Chris Mullin. This didn't matter in the end, as Mullin became a 5-time all-star and is currently the General Manager of the franchise. Drafted 18th, Joe Dumars was undoubtedly one of the best players of the 1985 Draft. He played his entire career with the Detroit Pistons, leading them to two titles (1989, 1990). He was elected into the NBA Hall of Fame and was described as Michael Jordan as the best defender he had ever faced in the NBA. |
